What is Tinnitus?

earTinnitus is probably best described as noise inside the ear which doesn’t originate from an external source.

The noise which tinnitus sufferers hear is often described as “Ringing in the Ears” because the noise often sounds like a ringing sound but can also sound like rushing water or wind, whistling, buzzing or humming.

Another symptom of tinnitus maybe pulsating in the ears (similar to a heartbeat), this form of tinnitus is called Pulsatile tinnitus, the ringing in the ears type of tinnitus is often referred to as Tonal tinnitus.

It is estimated approximately 17% of the worlds population suffer some form of tinnitus.There is no real identifiable cause of tinnitus, although many experts believe tinnitus can result from excessive loud noise exposure (as evidenced by the number of mp3 users being diagnosed with the affliction), stress is also thought to be one of the contributing factors as well as vitamin deficiency as well as trauma to the ear, high blood pressure and people who exhibit signs of artery hardening. There are a number of other possible causes for Tinnitus which we will explorer in more depth in coming articles.

With over 40 million sufferers in the United States alone, the race is on to findĀ  remedies for tinnitus , with potentially billions of dollars to be made from finding a treatment for tinnitus, pharmaceutical companies in particular are frantically trying to formulate a cure.
