The Symptoms of Tinnitus – The Two Forms of Tinnitus

Many people, even tinnitus sufferers themselves, are unaware that there are two main forms of tinnitus. Most people associate tinnitus with a ringing in the ears syndrome that only the sufferer can hear, when in fact the symptoms of tinnitus can vary greatly.

There are two main categories of tinnitus, pulsatile and non-pulsatile.

  • Pulsatile Symptoms of Tinnitus : this form of the condition is different to the usual association with ringing in the ears as mentioned above. Pulsate Tinnitus is caused in the main by restricted flow of blood through veins and arteries. This is usually caused by conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol and hardening of the arteries. The symptoms of tinnitus in this case are quite different to non-pulsatile forms of the affliction. In this form, the sufferer isn’t the only one that can hear the noise, people in close proximity of the patient can also hear the noise if they listen vary carefully. Essentially what is happening is due to the restricted blood, blood ends up moving in surges or as the name implies pulses every time the heart beats, instead of a smooth, even flow. A noise is generated in the persons ears in rhythm with their heartbeat.

The treatments for this form of tinnitus include, relaxation therapy, hypertension and cholesterol medication as well as surgery

  • Non Pulsatile Symptoms of Tinnitus : with  this form on the other hand, you can guess by the name it is not related to restricted blood flow. It is theorised that the main causes of this far more popular form of tinnitus include Meniere’s disease, damage to the ear canal or drum, exposure to high noise levels, wax build up and some sinus related allergies. It seems when there is no or minimal sounds able to be heard, the brain goes a little haywire and produces the ringing in the ears effect.  The noises produced are not limited to ringing, many describe the noise as the noise a sea shell makes when you hold it to your ear, wind rushing by your ear, buzzing or humming noises like electrical appliances.

There are a number of treatments for this form of tinnitus, ranging from more natural remedies for tinnitus through to surgical and medication options.
